Overview

This role is responsible for overseeing the gallery’s digital archive, image production, and visual content strategy. The role combines archival stewardship with creative leadership, ensuring that the gallery’s visual identity, documentation standards, and digital infrastructure operate at the highest professional level.

The position manages the production, organisation, and long-term preservation of photographic, video, and design assets, and directs the creation of high-quality visual content that reflects and strengthens the gallery’s public image. The role requires both technical and creative expertise.

Key Responsibilities

Archive & Digital Asset Management

  • Oversee and maintain the gallery’s digital archive, including image, video, and design assets, and restructure when required.
  • Promote and maintain rigorous file organisation standards across the gallery to ensure efficient access to digital assets.
  • Ensure consistent metadata, naming conventions, and storage protocols across all digital files.

ArtLogic & Inventory Database

  • Support the management of the ArtLogic database, maintaining image files and ensuring records remain accurate and up to date.

Photography & Visual Documentation

  • Manage artwork and installation photography in collaboration with our freelance photographer.
  • Undertake photography when needed with artists, artwork etc.
  • Management of all postproduction where appropriate, delivering work to a professional standard comparable to external providers.
  • Maintain consistency in visual documentation across exhibitions, artworks, and events.

Video Production & Events

  • Produce and manage in house video documentation, including artist interviews, studio visits, and gallery content.
  • Manage freelance videographers, when needed, to record talks, performances, and public programmes.
  • Record smaller internal events where necessary, while ensuring appropriate standards for public-facing content.
  • Edit and deliver video content suitable for online platforms and archival purposes.

Publications & Graphic Design

  • Lead the design and production of in-house publications.
  • Design and deliver smaller publications independently from concept through to completion.
  • Coordinate with printers, editors, and external collaborators for larger publication projects.
  • Ensure all publications reflect the gallery’s visual standards and brand identity.

Creative Direction & Content

  • Lead the creation of visual content across photography, video, and digital media.
  • Champion and shape the gallery’s visual identity across all digital outputs.
  • Take ownership of the gallery’s creative direction and content strategy across digital platforms.
  • Produce external visual materials, including but not limited to social media assets, invitations, and mailers.

Social Media & Digital Communications

  • Oversee the day-to-day management of the gallery’s social media platforms, ensuring consistent, timely, and professional communication across all channels.
  • Plan and maintain a structured social media calendar aligned with exhibition schedules, events, publications, and gallery announcements.
  • Produce and publish high-quality visual and video content optimised for social media platforms, maintaining consistency with the gallery’s visual identity.
  • Monitor engagement and platform performance, adapting content strategies to improve reach, audience engagement, and brand visibility.
  • Ensure all published content maintains accuracy, appropriate tone, and alignment with the gallery’s reputation and programme.
  • Stay informed on evolving platform standards, formats, and best practices to ensure the gallery remains current and competitive in digital communications.

Staff & Project Coordination

  • Manage freelance photographers, videographers, and other external collaborators.
  • Coordinate with registrars and technicians to schedule documentation of artworks, exhibitions, and installations.
  • Plan documentation schedules around exhibition programmes and logistical timelines.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing digital archives within a gallery, museum, or cultural institution.
  • Strong knowledge of digital asset management and archival best practices.
  • Experience with ArtLogic database systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including:
    • InDesign
    • Lightroom
    • Photoshop
    • Premiere Pro
  • Professional photography and video production skills.
  • Experience managing freelance creative professionals.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to design efficient digital workflows.
  • Excellent visual judgement and a strong understanding of gallery presentation standards.
