Alison Jacques Gallery invites you to a panel discussion addressing historic, contemporary and future questions around the value of women’s art, with speakers Melissa Gordon (artist), Isobel Harbison (critic and curator), Rehana Zaman (artist), and Marina Vishmidt (writer), chaired by Fiona McGovern (Director, Alison Jacques Gallery).
WE (Not I) began as a series of discussions and presentations at South London Gallery, London and Artists Space, New York in 2015, which gathered over 100 women artists, writers and curators together to discuss their projects in relation to authorship, collaboration, and the valuation of feminist practices.
Speculative Value: The Future of Women’s Value in the Arts is an event that aims to address questions raised by female practitioners during the WE (Not I) events. In recent years there has been a shift in the presence, appreciation, and exhibiting of art by both historic and contemporary female artists across all art fields. The panel will address what these changes entail for the re-evaluation of the past, the understanding of the present, and the potential of the future of art and art made by women.
Melissa Gordon is an artist based in London whose work addresses the question “Who gets to be abstract?”. She has exhibited at the Vleeshal, Middelberg, Spike Island, The Bluecoat, Stedelijk Museum, Kunstmuseum Bonn amongst others, and co-organized the project WE (Not I) with Marina Vishmidt at the South London Gallery and Artists Space.
Marina Vishmidt is a writer and a lecturer at Goldsmiths College and the Dutch Art Institute.
Dr Isobel Harbison is a lecturer, critic and curator based in London. In 2014 she was awarded the inaugural Arts Foundation Fellowship in Arts Journalism. Harbison is completing her first book, Performing Image, which identifies a movement in contemporary art where moving image and performance are brought together in response to a whole new image economy powered by image-performers, or “prosumers” (MIT Press, 2018).
Rehana Zaman is an artist based in London working predominantly with moving image. Her work considers the interplay of multiple social dynamics that constitute subjects along particular socio-political formations. These narrative based artworks, often deadpan and neurotic, are frequently generated through conversation and collaboration with others. She has exhibited at Tenderpixel, ICA, Studio Voltaire, London and Konsthal C, Stockholm. Rehana is one of the founding members of the Women of Colour Index Reading group.
Fiona McGovern is a Jersey Channel Islands born art professional, painter and collector. Following 7 years at Phillips auction house, Fiona is the Director of Alison Jacques Gallery and holds a variety of non-profit board and museum committee positions including The British Friends of the Art Musuems of Israel, Tate, Jersey Arts Trust and Artangel.
