in ‘Art in Stone’, Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, Barcelona
4 October 2024 – 2 February 2025
This exhibition at the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera celebrates the Casa Milà (popularly known as La Pedrera), a stone building designed by Antoni Gaudí. Conceived at the beginning of the 20th century, this building shares characteristics with the revolution in modern sculpture which took place much at the same time. ‘Art in Stone’ showcases work by eight sculptors born between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century who all use stone sculpting in their practice as a means of reconnecting to the process of making: Hans Arp, Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Chillida, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi and Jorge Oteiza.
This exhibition will also showcase the work of a number of contemporary artists who have similarly been drawn to the material quality of stone. ‘Art in Stone’ draws a lineage between the earlier ‘pioneers’ of modern sculpture and the next generation - Stephen Cox, Luciano Fabro, Barry Flanagan, Cristina Iglesias, Anish Kapoor, Ettore Spalletti and Alison Wilding.
