Ana Mendieta’s series Untitled (Facial Hair Transplants) from 1972 is included in HAIR: Stories of Power and Passion at Kunsthalle München, an exhibition exploring the cultural, political and personal significance of hair across three millennia of art and visual culture.
Bringing together works from antiquity to the present, the exhibition considers hair as a marker of identity, beauty, desire, power, vulnerability, conformity and rebellion. Across painting, sculpture, photography, film, design and cultural artefacts, HAIR examines how hair has shaped ideas of status, gender, belonging and self-representation, while also reflecting broader social, religious and political histories.
