Birgit Jürgenssen is included in Insurgencies – Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s: Works from the VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna at the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo, on view from 28 March until 28 June 2026.
Jürgenssen, one of the most significant figures of the international feminist avant-garde, developed a radical practice across photography, drawing, performance and object-making. Her work often used the body, domestic space and everyday objects to challenge the social roles imposed on women, combining sharp humour with an incisive critique of patriarchy, identity and representation.
The exhibition situates Jürgenssen’s work within a wider international history of feminist experimentation, foregrounding artists who used photography, performance, film and video to contest the conventions of the female body, domestic labour, sexuality and self-image.
Presented for the first time outside Europe, the exhibition brings together pioneering works by women artists from the 1970s, selected from the VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna, alongside works from MAC USP’s own holdings.
