Bukhara Biennial is a new contemporary initiative across newly restored historic landmarks in the city of Bukhara, a UNESCO Creative City of Craft & Folk Art. The Biennial marks is one of the largest and most diverse art initiatives in Central Asia, and the first contemporary art event of such scale in the city. Commissioned by Gayane Umerova, Chairperson of the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation, both the first edition of the Biennale and organisation drives the restoration and amplification of culture across the Uzbekistan and internationally.
The Biennial’s theme, ‘Recipes for Broken Hearts’ is curated by Artistic Director Diana Campbell, celebrates artistic disciplines from across the globe, with new commissions made exclusively in Uzbekistan, in collaboration with several of the country’s most masterful artisans and produced by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation.
The biennial’s debut edition will feature an interdisciplinary list of Uzbek, Central Asian and international participants, who will each present site-specific artworks and installations alongside a programme of events, performances and culinary activations.
