Fernanda Gomes has created ‘Untitled’, 2024 especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition ‘Lygia Clark: The I and the You’, 2 Oct 2024 – 12 Jan 2025. The work is an Edition of 45, accompanied by a signed and numbered certificate.
Gomes refers to her sculptural constructions as ‘things’. Formally exquisite yet intrinsically disposable, works are often composed of found and commonplace materials, which are folded, cut, glued or taped. For Gomes, the white wall is full of information, the object and the space it occupies, is part of the piece. Her Whitechapel Gallery edition; a painted white square, strung on a small nail, comprises parts both physical and elemental. The cotton canvas, hand-painted to both sides with wall paint, is scored with a horizontal cut, joining a vertical thread. Minimal shifts of tonality and light, activate the empty space, articulating colour and light as matter.
