Sheila Hicks is the subject of a major solo exhibition at West Bund Museum, Shanghai. Hicks’ has been active on the international art scene since the early 1960s, working primarily with fibre, colour, and structure, and her exhibition is produced in tandem with another exhibition by Shi Hui (b. 1955, lives in Hangzhou). Both are pushing the traditions of art-making through experimentation using humble materials in innovative modes.
This double solo exhibition captures how Sheila Hicks intertwines threads, colours, and histories, and plays with softness and monumentality. Curated by Clément Dirié and Liu Xiao, the show reconsiders art history through material is to reconcile the eye, the hand, and the intellect, and embrace tactility and contemplation at once.
