That transformation was a lifelong concern for the late Austrian artist Birgit Jürgenssen is apparent in her recently reappraised work from the 1970s: high heels emerge like weaponised nipples from unexpected places on her body, vaginas sprout in the crevices of books and shoes morph into animals.
