From the 1960s, Lenore Tawney created whimsical and ingenious postcard collages. Tawney’s dynamic cards were sent through the mail to friends and family members and arrived in excellent condition, testimonial to the postal workers’ appreciation of the artist’s gifts.
As this book of postcard collages shows, most of these works were made entirely of paper, featuring photographs, newspaper clippings, musical scores and illustrations. Specific images occur regularly, encompassing animals. The postcards subtly develop a range of themes, including childhood, female sexuality, masculine self-aggrandisement and spirituality, and are invariably embedded with personal references.
Lenore Tawney: Signs of the Wind includes an essay by Holland Cotter.
