Thread Trees River was edited by Christoph Thun-Hohenstein and Barbel Vischer and published to coincide with Sheila Hicks’s 2020 exhibition of the same name at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) Vienna in 2020.
Hicks’s textiles and installations evade traditional concepts of textile art. She expands the languages of sculpture, painting, and the environment by creating new forms and dimensions.
Inspired by the ideas of the Wiener Werkstatte and the Bauhaus, as well as pre-Inca textile traditions, she dissolves the boundaries of medium and material and employs historical techniques of knotting and weaving as contemporary instruments to initiate intercultural dialogue and to create an awareness of the small deviants in grid pattern that make life interesting.
