Published to accompany ‘Ana Mendieta’ at Tate Modern, the first major UK exhibition of Mendieta’s work in over a decade, this fully illustrated catalogue brings together over 200 expertly reproduced images of the artist’s work. The publication includes Mendieta’s widely celebrated ‘Silueta’ series, in which the artist outlined her own body in the landscape using earth, fire, water, flowers and other materials.
Essays by contributors including Chus Martínez, Ida Panicelli and María Elena Ortiz look closely at individual works from across Mendieta’s career, from rare early paintings such as ‘De Película’ (1969) to ephemeral sculptures, including the ‘Sandwoman’ series, and ‘Atabey (Mother of the Waters)’, made in the early 1980s alongside the soft limestone walls of caves outside Havana.
