Working in Paris for the last 60 years, Hicks’ extensive travels to Latin America, Japan and the Middle East reflect the curious spirit of her work, wandering and deviating from pre-planned paths. Hicks’ thirst for innovation and adventure enables her to continue to elevate our perception of humble materials as she places them centre stage, expanding our experience of the possibilities of sculpture. As Hicks said in a recent interview with the Financial Times, ‘thread is the universal language’.

Thread also responds to Hicks’ deep desire to work with colour. As the artist says, ‘Thread is very friendly with colour. To apply paint to a canvas is simply to create a coating, but when making compositions with threads, the colour permeates the work’.

Our solo presentation is an opportunity to see the breadth of Hicks’ practice: from diaristic small scale Minimes, woven on a wooden loom Hicks has travelled with since the 1950s, to larger scale series including wrapped linen ‘paintings’, woven Bas Relief panels and silk and linen hanging ‘vine’ works called Lianes. An installation of Hicks’ intricately bound and wrapped Talking Sticks is the central focus, alongside vibrantly coloured convex sculptures referred to as Comets. This comprehensive overview showcases many of the series of works which Hicks has developed and evolved throughout her 70-year-long career.
