Maria Bartuszová is one of the most remarkable modern sculptors. She became renowned for her abstract plaster sculptures, which appear fragile and poetic while simultaneously inviting the viewer’s touch. Her works are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Tate in London, the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava and the Kontakt Collection in Vienna. Maria Bartuszová was born in Prague on 24 April 1936. While studying at UMPRUM, she met the sculptor Juraj Bartusz. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Košice in Slovakia, where Maria lived and worked for the remainder of her life. A prolific artist, she created approximately 500 sculptures, ranging from small organic forms to public commissions and works situated in nature.
