Ana Mendieta’s art was shrouded in myth even during her lifetime. She worked alone, outdoors, in secluded and unexpected places, often returning to the same locations. “Because I have no homeland, I feel the need to become one with the earth, to return to its womb,” she said, and she meant it literally. Using earth, leaves, sand, stones, blood, water, tempera, tree trunks, grass, flowers and fire, Ana became the earth. Now, the profound and enduring mark she left on contemporary art in less than two decades will become tangible in a major exhibition at Tate Modern in London. It will present her iconic works alongside newly restored films, early paintings and later sculptures, while also extending beyond the gallery walls to explore Mendieta’s deep connection with the natural world.
