Alison Jacques Gallery Now Represents Veronica Ryan
The British artist’s inaugural exhibition will open in Summer 2022

Alison Jacques is proud to announce the gallery’s representation of British artist Veronica Ryan (b. 1956, Plymouth, Montserrat).
Veronica Ryan is acclaimed for her sculptural assemblages that respond to and reflect the natural world. Making reference to fruits, seeds and vegetables, as well as the modular trays in which they are stored, Ryan’s work sits at a midpoint between opposing principles: interior and exterior, absence and presence, material and object memory.
The announcement anticipates ‘Along a Spectrum’, a major solo exhibition of new work at Spike Island, Bristol, in May 2021. Supported by Freelands Foundation through the Freelands Award, which was presented to Ryan in 2018, this is the artist’s most expansive and ambitious exhibition in the UK to date.
In May 2021, Ryan will also unveil a new commission, along with British artist Tacita Dean, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Hepworth Wakefield, Leeds. The new commissions will be installed within the largest survey of Barbara Hepworth’s work since her death in 1975.
In October 2021, Ryan will present a major permanent artwork in the London Borough of Hackney for the Windrush Commission, the UK’s first public sculpture to honour the Windrush Generation. The work, a collection of bronze and marble casts of Caribbean fruits and vegetables, is inspired by Ryan’s childhood memories of visiting Ridley Road Market in Hackney: ‘Little did I know, those early experiences would become essential material for my practice as an artist.’
Ryan’s inaugural solo exhibition with Alison Jacques is scheduled to open in Spring 2022. Ryan is also represented by Paula Cooper Gallery, New York.
Ryan has had recent solo exhibitions at Hepworth Wakefield, UK (2017); The Art House, Wakefield, UK (2017); The Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US (2011); Salena Gallery, Long Island University, New York, US (2005); and Tate St Ives, UK (2000). She has been the recipient of numerous grants, awards and prizes, including the Windrush Commission (2021); the Pollock-Krasner Grant (2019); and the Freelands Award (2018).
Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester, UK (2019); Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne, UK (2019); Nottingham Contemporary, UK (2019); Arts Council Collection Tour (2015); Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, UK (2009); The Brooklyn Museum, New York, US (2007); Tate Modern, London, UK (2005); and Tate Liverpool, UK (2000).
Ryan is represented in a numerous permanent collections, including the Arts Council Collection, London, UK; Contemporary Art Society, London, UK; Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, UK; Kettle’s Yard, University of Cambridge, UK; The Sainsbury Centre Collection, Norwich, UK; Tate, London; The Wakefield Art Collection at The Hepworth Wakefield, UK; and the Weltkunst Collection at IMMA, Dublin, Ireland.
