Born in Rome, the artist Bona de Mandiargues (1926–2000) studied in Venice, where she lived with her uncle, the painter Filippo de Pisis. Moving to Paris, she quickly fell in with the Surrealists, including Breton and Man Ray, who photographed her several times. In the late 1950s, while in Mexico and estranged from her husband, she began to create appliqued collages with the cut-up linings of his suits. In a milieu dominated by men, Bona, as she called herself, always asserted symbolic female power in her art, which, over the course of the 1960s, grew increasingly psychedelic in appearance. […]
