Alison Jacques is pleased to announce the inclusion of Ana Mendieta and Lygia Clark in the group show ‘Action, Gesture, Performance: Feminism, the Body and Abstraction’ at Whitechapel Gallery.
In performances, photographs and films, featured work by Ana Mendieta explores themes of violence against women and the physical and spiritual connection between her body and the Earth. Expanded abstract painting and sculpture by Lygia Clark will successfully blur the distinction between art and life.
This exhibition accompanies ‘Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940-70’ and focuses on pioneering dance and performance practices by women artists who were using their bodies to explore freedom of expression, subjectivity and politics.
