Part of the Instituto Tomie Ohtake’s 25th-anniversary programme, a major solo exhibition of Sheila Hicks’s work will open in São Paulo on 20 August 2026 and remain on view until 25 October 2026.
The exhibition builds on Hicks’s existing relationship with the institution, which presented her work Bâtons de parole in the 2025 group exhibition The Earth, the Fire, the Water and the Winds: For a Museum of Errantry with Édouard Glissant.
Hicks’s practice has longstanding connections with Latin America. After studying painting at Yale, she travelled to Chile in 1957 before continuing across South America, where she studied textile techniques, met craftspeople and engaged with Indigenous and pre-Columbian traditions. These experiences became foundational to her understanding of thread and fibre as structural, cultural and expressive materials.
