Ana Mendieta: Search for Origin
MO.CO. Panacée, Montpellier
3 June – 17 September 2023
Ana Mendieta’s practice is the subject of the survey exhibition ‘Search for Origin’ currently on display at MO.CO. Panacée. Bringing together over 100 works spanning 15-years of production (1968-1985) and including performative recreations, the exhibition explores how the Cuban born, American artist never ceased to reinvent herself, developing an original, ephemeral sculptural language, advanced by her research into primitive myths and rock art.
The exhibition focuses particularly on revealing Mendieta’s relationship to the visible and the invisible, rendering the unspeakable intelligible through the trace of the body, and how it relates to nature. The exhibition celebrates the contemporary relevance of such political and vibrant work within today’s environment and political context.
Ana Mendieta, Search for Origin is curated by Numa Hambursin, director of MO.CO., Vincent Honoré, director of exhibitions, Rahmouna Boutayeb, curator and produced in collaboration with MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (Spain), and with Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland) where the exhibition will tour.
