Maria Bartuszová
in ‘Paper, Rock, Scissors: Materials and tools of art’, Kinder Kunst Labor
14 March – 25 August 2025

Maria Bartuszová is included in a group show ‘Paper, Rock, Scissors: Materials and tools of art’ at Kinder Kunst Labor. In the children’s game ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’, a frequently used decision-making tool, the gesture of the stronger position wins. But power is always relative. Paper is stronger than rock, but rock wins against scissors, which in turn defeats paper. The title of the group exhibition ‘Paper, Rock, Scissors,’ which explores the materials and tools of art, refers to this game. The materials artists choose and how they work with them depend on their capabilities, perceptions, and preferences in the context of their lives and childhood. The exhibition presents works that make these specific interrelationships between biography, history, and artistic work sensually and aesthetically tangible, especially for a young audience.
Paper, Rock, Scissors also brings renowned artistic positions into dialogue with historical artifacts. The future—but also the history of materials and tools in everyday life (sustainability and technological development)—is also a topic, as is the question of when craftsmanship becomes art.
