Sheila Hicks (b.1934, Hastings, Nebraska) will present her first major institutional solo exhibition in Germany with two concurrent exhibitions at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, opening 11 October 2024, and Josef Albers Museum Quadrat Bottrop, opening 12 October 2024, both continuing until 23 February 2025.
The Josef Albers Museum is presenting a retrospective, bringing together works from 1955 to 2024, including early paintings from Hicks’ time as a student of Josef Albers that have never been shown. Early textile works, works from her time in Chile, Mexico and Morocco, designs for large architecture-related commissioned works and her more recent, colourful wall objects, sculptures and installation works will also be on display, supplemented by sketches and materials from the artist’s archive. Kunsthalle Düsseldorf will exhibit new work, large-format, partly site-specific installations and sculptures unfold their intense power in contrast to the brutalist architecture of the exhibition rooms and also show the artist’s latest experiments with materials and forms. A catalogue will be published to accompany both shows.
