Sophie Barber is included in the group exhibition ‘Le Hangar’, alongside Tiago Carneiro da Cunha, Heinz Frank, ektor garcia, Andy Giannakakis, Naotaka Hiro, Hana Miletić, Sarah McMenimen and J. Parker Valentine through 14 November 2020.
Le Hangar borrows its name from the Parisian restaurant in which La Maison de Rendez-Vous was conceived in October 2018. An anniversary (of sorts) then, this exhibition brings together 9 artists from the various programs and spheres of interest of the four programs which compose La Maison de Rendez-Vous. As such, it can be read as a menu, both of what has taken place at the gallery and, more importantly, what is to come. Aspirationally rich, variegated and precise, this modest cornucopia has much to offer the discerning (art) gourmand.
Erring toward if not the Epicurean, then the downright Dionysian, the works in this exhibition evince a sensuous relish of craft, materials and even, occasionally, a visceral messiness. Humor and levity can also be found in substantial portions in the paintings, sculpture and works on paper here, to say nothing of the formal and conceptual sophistication which is liable to lead to much postprandial rumination.
