Turner prize shows art turning to experience over youth

A co-chairman of the Turner prize has hailed the triumph of experience over youth after 66-year-old Veronica Ryan won the contemporary art award. Ryan received the £25,000 first prize for sculptures created from found objects such as seeds and nutshells, as well as fabric and plaster. The shortlisted artists Heather Phillipson, Ingrid Pollard and Sin Wai Kin receive £10,000.
Alex Farquharson, the Tate Britain director and Turner prize jury co-chairman, said the panel impressed by the “turn” in Ryan’s work in recent years, adding: “It is really interesting when an artist late in their career makes breakthroughs in their practice”. The Turner prize, which was established in 1984, had an age limit of 50 between 1991 and 2016. […]
