Alison Jacques Gallery is please to announce ‘Dan Fischer: Drawings, 1999–2021’, a two-decade survey of work by Dan Fischer, which is on view at The FLAG Art Foundation, New York, until 13 August 2021.
Consisting of 70 works spanning from 1999 to 2021, the exhibition highlights Fischer’s iterative exploration of the nature of the photographic medium, mechanical reproduction, and the idea of creating an original copy – a ‘handmade readymade’ or ‘retro-appropriation.
Focusing on well-known, often iconic, representations of artists and artworks, Fischer uses photographs as his starting point. The richly textured, monochromatic drawings he creates replicate these source materials, which the American artist has defined as ‘incredible images from the past 100 years of art history’.
To date, he has depicted such a diverse range of figures as Lygia Clark and Philip Guston in their studios; Andy Warhol appearing before his ‘Flowers’ series; and self-portraits of Ana Mendieta, Gillian Wearing and Hannah Wilke. Fischer is not reliant on a particular system when selecting the images he chooses to duplicate, yet nonetheless has a criteria: ‘I can say that I only draw artists or artworks that have inspired or moved me’.
